Buying or borrowing a box fan from a neighbor or family member is recommended if you need the carpet to dry in 3-4 hours. Most carpets dry in 6 to 8 hours depending on weather, in home temperature, and air flow. The warmer the air the faster the drying. The less traffic the better on wet carpeting.
Most of the over the counter stain removers will say if they are safe for certain types of carpeting. Pre-test with white rag in a closet or hidden area if you suspect you are using a harsh chemical or have unique carpeting. Paint thinners / removers should not be used as they will eat the glue that holds the carpet together. Do not over agitate carpet fibers(rubbing) as this will damage individual fibers. Weighting down several layers of paper towels or white towels with plastic baskets of clothes while drying will help lift the stain naturally. Club soda works on all types of wet cleanable fabrics. Carbonation in the soda will help lift the stain as well. Choose the right solution for the stain if you know what it is.
Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! Twice a week can increase the life of your carpets by 10 years or more. A well placed area rug by the front door or garage door will help reduce sand & soiling as well. Don't get a colored(red, green, blue) rug. Stay neutral to avoid a permanent new stain from the area rug to your floor at home. When a rug gets wet or is in the sunlight during the day it may leave a new permanent stain. Cheap or cotton rugs cause the most problems. Check rug with a wet white cloth for dye transfer.
